The Fundamentals of Indian Classical Singing in the Dhrupad Style

What awaits you during this weekend…
A Journey Through Indian Melodies
Dr. Aditi Sharma Garg, a renowned dhrupad singer, composer, and musicologist, comes from a multi-generational family of musicians. She began her musical training at the age of four under the guidance of her grandfather, Pt. Krishna Datt Sharma, and her father, Pt. Shri Datt Sharma, and thus carries forward the rich heritage of the dhrupad tradition.
At this retreat, Dr. Aditi Sharma Garg shows how conscious coordination of vocal production and breathing can bring you closer to Indian classical singing. Participants will learn the fundamentals of dhrupad, including the practical application of subtle vocal arcs, melodic turns, and improvisational elements—all presented in a simple and easy-to-understand way.
During the program, we focus on the unity of voice, presence, and attention. You will not only learn technique, but also experience how singing can become a form of meditation and self-expression. The retreat is open to everyone, from beginners to advanced practitioners, who wish to explore the beauty and depth of Indian classical music.
Practising with Dr. Aditi Sharma Garg also offers the opportunity to learn directly from an internationally recognised master who promotes the dhrupad style both in India and abroad, and who brings decades of experience in classical and semi-classical genres.
This program is an exceptionally special and unique opportunity. Dr. Aditi Sharma Garg is joining us from India as part of a European tour, making this the only chance to meet her and learn directly from her.
The sessions will be held in English, with Hungarian interpretation provided so that everything remains clear and enjoyable for all participants.
On the final day, Sunday, there will be an opportunity to come together in a shared presentation, offering a glimpse of what we have learned over the weekend about the dhrupad style and its practical application.
The retreat takes place in Krishna Valley, a quiet, nature-rich location especially well suited for deep learning and practice. Far from the noise of the city, its orderly and uncluttered environment supports concentration, work with breath and voice, and the inner attentiveness that lies at the heart of Indian classical singing practice. The atmosphere of Krishna Valley naturally encourages slowing down and inner focus, providing an ideal setting for the retreat’s processes.
